ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is a chronic neurological disease that most sufferers have for many years. Symptoms are many and varied including severe exhaustion, pain, nausea, headaches and poor concentration. People of all ages can get ME and it can be very disabling. Currently there is no cure, few treatments and not even a diagnostic test which means misdiagnosis is common. There is an estimated 250,000 people in the UK and 17 million worldwide who have this disease, 25 per cent of these are severe and either house or bedbound. At the moment there are few treatments available in the UK beyond medication for pain and coping strategies like pacing. This is despite some drugs showing promise in treating ME. There is also little research taking place into the disease because of lack of funding which means the prospect of finding a cure, treatments and gaining better understanding about the disease are limited.
Sarah Lake, the Guider in Charge of the event, said: “This is a cause very close to my heart as I have been suffering from ME for 3 years now, and although I only have it mildly, the impact on my everyday lifestyle has been devastating. I would dearly like to use this opportunity to raise as much money as I can to support the research that is so desperately needed.”
The Big Sleep for ME also has a JustGiving page if you would like to donate funds either via the website: http://www.justgiving.com/thebigsleepforme2014 and the TextGiving code is BSME66. To donate via text all you need to do is put in the code followed by the amount you want to donate, i.e: BSME66 £5 and send it to 70070. The minimum donation amount via text is £1
