West Lancashire elections countdown

THE countdown has begun to European parliamentary and local elections on Thursday, May 22.

More than five million people across North West England will have the opportunity to vote in European elections to select the region’s eight Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

At the same time, electors in the West Lancashire Borough Council area will be choosing Borough Councillors for the following wards, Ashurst, Aughton & Downholland, Aughton Park, Burscough East, Burscough West, Derby, Hesketh-with-Becconsall, Knowsley, Moorside, Newburgh, North Meols, Parbold, Scarisbrick, Scott, Skelmersdale South, Tanhouse, Tarleton (two seats) and Up Holland.

Voters go to the polls on Thursday, May 22 for both Borough Council and European Parliamentary elections. The West Lancashire Borough Council local election results count and declaration will take place on Friday, May 23 and the North West European elections count and declaration on Sunday, May 25, as polls close across Europe.

Parish areas where there may also be elections, if the seats are to be contested, are: Downholland; Great Altcar; Burscough – St Johns; Burscough – Ellerbrook; Burscough – Red Cat; Burscough – Stanley; Burscough - Richmond; Burscough Town; Burscough – New Lane; Lathom; and Newburgh.

People will not be able to vote in any of these elections unless they have ensured they are on the electoral register by Tuesday, May 6.

Anyone who is on the electoral register can choose to register to vote by post. Applications for a postal vote in the forthcoming elections must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, May 7.

Poll cards for those who are already on the electoral register will begin to be delivered from Tuesday, April 15, so people who are registered should look out for theirs being delivered.

Anyone who is not registered can visit www.westlancs.gov.uk/elections to download a registration form. Alternatively, or if they need to update their details (for example if they have changed address or changed surname through marriage since registering) or check whether they are on the register, they should email elections.office@westlancs.gov.uk or call 01695 585014. Registration is a quick and easy process.

A full list of candidates for the European Parliamentary Elections will be published at 5pm on Thursday, April 24. A full list of candidates for West Lancashire Borough Council elections will be published no later than noon on April 28.

Sir Howard Bernstein, Regional Returning Officer for the European Parliamentary Elections in the North West, said: “This election gives people the chance to elect the politicians who will represent them in Europe. It is essential to make sure that nobody loses out on their right to vote because they are not registered.”

Gill Rowe, Returning Officer for West Lancashire, said: “People in West Lancashire will have the chance to vote for their representatives on the Borough Council and in the European Parliament and there may also be Parish Council elections. Please check to make sure you’re on the Register of Electors and if you can’t make it to the polling station on the day, or prefer to vote by post, then why not apply for a postal vote?”.
