Clint McKay took a hat-trick to put England in trouble on eight for three in the fourth NatWest Series match at the SWALEC Stadium.
England appeared to have good prospects of levelling the series score here at 1-1, with one more to play, after bowling Australia out for 227.
But McKay almost immediately undermined the hosts with the wickets of Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and then Joe Root in successive balls at the start of his second over.
Pietersen fell lbw aiming across the line, then out-of-form Trott pushed out at a full and wide ball and was caught head-high at second slip, before Root edged to first.
Only George Bailey (87) had helped Australia rescue a patchy but still apparently vulnerable total on a surprisingly pacy but not entirely reliable pitch.
