Ormskirk man Christopher William Corlett died after his motorbike hit a car at a busy junction in Melling

AN Ormskirk man died after his motorbike hit a car at a busy junction in Melling on Tuesday.

Christopher William Corlett, 20, was thrown from his bike at around 7am on Prescot Road, near The Mount independent petrol garage and the Pear Tree public house.

Mr Corlett, who was going in the direction of Kirkby and was believed to be heading to work, was taken to Fazakerley Hospital where he later died.

Prescot Road was closed off for several hours while police launched an investigation and debris was cleared from the scene.

Mr Corlett was riding a blue Yamaha motorbike when he collided with a Volkswagen Polo car.

A police spokesman said: “The driver of the Polo stopped at the scene and is currently assisting the police with their enquiries.”

One driver, who wanted to travel on the road, said: “The road was blocked because of the fatality.

“All around the area cars that were coming from Kirkby and Ormskirk were re-routed elsewhere. It’s a bad junction and very fast.”

The junction is notorious for car accidents and there have been several crashes at the spot in recent years, including one which saw a car crash into the nearby Pear Tree public house, and another biker death in 2002.

Anyone with information should contact road traffic police on 0151-777 5771 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111.
