Ormskirk man Roy Bayfield visits the Bermuda Triangle of West Lancashire – Argleton in Aughton

“I was curious to see if there was anything special about the place. It was actually deceptively normal.”

But for businesses on the Internet, Argleton is very real.

On Letopedia, a property search website, you can buy and rent property in Argleton, not to mention find health care, pain relief, jobs, and even a hotel – West Tower is, in fact, in Argleton.

For anyone wishing to plan their visit, a full Argleton weather report can be obtained from wunderground.com.

However, Roy has several theories.

“Some people think they have simply got the name Aughton wrong, though Aughton appears as well, or that it is a deliberate mistake, designed to catch out unauthorised users of the maps, like a ‘trap street’ inserted in an A-Z map.”

There was only way to clear this up, The Advertiser spoke to Google.

A Google spokesperson said: “The map data found in Google Maps is sourced largely from NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas.

“Sometimes our automated system makes a mistake in presenting the maps data. We always welcome user feedback on our products, and we correct mistakes as quickly as we can.”
