New firm to move into Ormskirk’s Woolworths store

A MAJOR retailer is to move into the former Woolworth’s site on Aughton Street.

West Lancashire Council has said it is unable to release the name of the store ‘for reasons of commercial confidentiality’.

But it has revealed that the company is a large national retailer with more than 500 stores across the country.

Council officers hope that the former Ponden Mill store, also on Aughton Street, will have new occupants over the next couple of months.

A third shop unit, the former Motorworld on Moor Street, is currently offer and likely to be trading under a new name in the near future.

Councillor Adrian Owens, West Lancashire Council Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Estates, said: “The Borough Council has been working tirelessly to support local businesses during the national economic downturn. We have been focusing on preventing shops from closing and encouraging new businesses into vacant units.

“Our worry was that the empty units in Ormskirk would deter shoppers and investors from doing business here. So we are delighted that we have bucked the trend.

“This news is a positive sign for the future and hopefully other retailers will follow suit and open up in the town centre.”
