Gigantic cake was the centre of celebrations

ON June 23, 1994 a giant birthday cake was the centre piece of a fantastic children's picnic thrown in Eccleston to mark the 900th anniversary of St. Mary's Church.

The gargantuan cake was baked by Ann Tester and iced by Pat Haliwood. The cake was so big that it had to be iced on a door.

The cake itself measured 66ins by 45ins.

It was cut into more than 500 pieces so that all the children and a good number of parents could enjoy the cake.

Apart from the food the children got a surprise visit from Camelot with King Arthur, Sir Percival and Mad Edgar coming to help cut the cake. The picnic guests were well entertained by the surprise visitors and magician Brian Gore.
