Edge Hill University students celebrate 2009 degree results

Some 2,000 students will celebrate a proud day in their lives when they graduate from Edge Hill University.

Students from the university’s three faculties will receive their degrees at four ceremonies held in Ormskirk and at Lancaster University.

Edge Hill University Chancellor, Professor Tanya Byron, will present the Ormskirk awards while Lancaster University’s Pro Chancellor Bryan Gray CBE and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Stanley Henig will award the degrees in Lancaster.

This year the University is recording a number of significant, historic “firsts”.

The first ever Master of Surgery students will graduate. BA Social Work Studies graduates will become the first ever students to complete a three-year degree fully accredited by Edge Hill, following the institution gaining full university status in 2006.

Four recipients will be awarded honorary degrees for exemplary achievements in their respective fields.

Moya Sutton, Executive Nurse at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, will receive an Honorary Fellowship.

Edge Hill graduate and international soccer player Sue Smith, who has captained the England side, will receive an Honorary Masters degree.

Dr Anne Merriman, founder of Hospice Uganda, will fly over from Africa to receive an Honorary Doctorate.

Dr Tim Gill, one of the UK’s leading thinkers on childhood, will receive an Honorary Doctorate.

Dr John Cater, Edge Hill University Vice-Chancellor, said:

“Graduation is a key date in the University’s calendar in which we celebrate the impressive academic achievements of our students. It is a proud day for the graduates, who have worked hard to attain their awards and have in many cases overcome academic and personal challenges along the way.

“It is also a very special day for their families as they share this memorable occasion.

“Congratulations to all the Class of 2009 and I hope Edge Hill proves to be a launch pad for a highly successful and rewarding career.”
