Shoppers cower from sparks as raiders take whizzer saw to cash machine in Maghull

SHOPPERS watched on in terror as three men took a whizzer to a cash machine in Maghull.

Sparks flew across the Simply Drinks store on Dover Road as staff and customers cowered on the floor.

At around 7.30pm on Saturday November 7 three men burst into the off-license and demanded cash from terrified staff.

They then told everyone to get down, as they produced an industrial electric wheel saw, known as a whizzer, and took it to a free standing ATM machine within the shop.

The gang attempted to cut through the sturdy metal casing of the cash dispenser, sending a shower of sparks flying.

Luckily no-one was injured, but detectives said that the attack had made on-lookers fear for their safety and left them extremely shaken.

The three men eventually gave up their attempts, and made off empty handed.

Detective Inspector Neil Blanchard from Sefton CID robbery team condemned the raid.

He said: “What they have done is dangerous and showed a total disregard for the safety of customers.

“It was a nasty offence and a very unpleasant experience.”

Officers are asking for anyone who was in the area on November 7 to come forward.

They are also keen to trace the owner of a silver BMW three series which was double parked outside the shop.
