Work begins to move Comrades Club war memorial to new home in Ormskirk’s Coronation Park

WORK to move Ormskirk War Memorial to its new, permanent home in Coronation Park begins at the end of the month.

The memorial currently stands in the Comrades of the Great War Club but rebuilding work on the site is due to begin and the club’s closure has made relocation a necessity.

Following the move, the rededication is set to take place at the end of October, in time for the Remembrance Day commemorations in November.

The new site, close to Park Road and the main park entrance, was approved in May.

Cllr David Sudworth, the borough’s portfolio holder for health, leisure and community safety, said: “We were delighted to approve this location when the Comrades Club’s trustees requested it.

“It is in a quiet area of the park and will allow better access for ceremonies and individuals to pay their respects.”

Initial works will see the foundations for the memorial’s new location prepared.

This will mean the removal of one of Coronation Park’s exisiting trees although an alternative has been planted in another location to compensate.
