Man left fighting for life after falling down stairs in Ormskirk nightclub

A MAN was fighting for his life in hospital after a fall in a West Lancs nightclub.

The 53-year-old was walking downstairs to exit The Mustard Club in Ormskirk at around 11.30pm on Saturday night when he fell five steps from the bottom.

The victim, from Skelmersdale, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Fazakerley hospital where he was placed on life support.

On Tuesday, the man was critically ill and fighting for his life. The Advertiser understands he was taken off life support and was not expected to survive.

Police were notified about the incident after the man’s arrival at hospital and attended the scene at around 1.20am on Sunday to view CCTV footage.

Acting Inspector Andy Willis said: “We are not treating the fall as suspicious.

“This is a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the family.”

Ian Gordon, owner of the club on Moor Street said his thoughts were also with the man’s family.

He said: “We’ve looked over the CCTV and the man was around five steps from the bottom, when he lurches forward like he lost his balance.

“He’s not managed to put his hands out in time to break his fall and landed on his head.

“Two off-duty nurses who were outside gave him first aid and one of my doorman rang 999.

“You never expect anything like this to happen. It was just a freak accident.”

The Health & Safety Executive was notified but an investigation will not be launched.
