Parbold Picture House wins innovation prize at national film society awards

PARBOLD Picture House has won a national prize for innovation at an awards ceremony in London.

The picture house was presented with the Jim Dempster Award For Innovation – which celebrates groups that think “outside the box” and break the usual mould of community cinema in the whole of the UK – at the 2012 British Federation for Film Society Awards ceremony on Saturday.

It recognises two new developments: its “Talking Pictures” discussion group and the new “Front Row” series of Live Transmissions of Theatre, Opera and Ballet, which add to its role in the community and the wider area.

Parbold Picture House won the award of Best New UK Community Cinema in 2010. The Picture House is based in the transformed Parbold Village Hall and is run by the Parbold Community Association, which operates the Village Hall for the community.

With a grant from the Arts Council, The Picture House has started the new Front Row series of Live satellite transmissions from renowned theatre, opera and ballet companies from around the world to give rural audiences access to the world’s finest performances.

The Picture House is currently presenting Sydney Opera House and National Theatre Live productions.

The next NTLive performances are The Last Of the Haussmans, with Julie Walters, at 7pm on Thursday, October 11, and Timon of Athens, with Simon Russell Beale, at 7pm on Thursday, November 1.
