Thoughtful pupils design advice booklet

PUPILS have helped design an information booklet for children affected by their mothers’ drinking when they were pregnant.

The booklet covers a range of conditions known as Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

Janet Lester, from Design 4 Print in Skelmersdale, who sponsored the event, received more than 100 entries from Our Ladies Queen of Peace Catholic Engineering College. Competition winners Joseph Howard and Beth Guest designed the artwork for the booklet which aims to help children affected understand what is wrong with them and explains what FASD is.

FASD covers a group of physical and mental birth defects resulting from a woman drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

FASawareUK is a local voluntary group which offers support and advice to anyone who may have been affected.

Orders have now come in for the booklet from across the world, including 10 in the USA.

Gloria Armistead, from FASawareUK, said: “We are extremely proud of this booklet and know that the children taking part will be aware that drinking in pregnancy creates problems for all. I would like to thank all the children who entered the competition. Thanks also to science teacher MrAshworth who encouraged so many children to enter.”
