A Labour Councillor has been appointed Maghull Town Council's new Older Person's Champion.
Cllr Rita Knight has taken on the role to ensure that the interests of the town's senior community's interests are best served.
The Older Person's Champion is working with Age Concern to ensure that Maghull Town Council provides:
One-to-one and group counselling services
Information, advice and casework support, backed by the Royal British Legion
Befriending coffee morning
Computer skills with IT support provided by Maghull Town Council
Job skills for the over 50s
Cooking for one and healthy eating
Walking and cycling groups
Cllr Knight said she had taken on the role to ensure that older people in Maghull got the care and representation they needed.
Cllr Knight said: "Now more than ever older people in our community need extra support. That's why my Labour colleagues and I on Maghull Town Council created this new voluntary role.
"I want to see help and training being given to the over 50s to help them get back into employment because they have been hit hard by the economic crisis. I'd particularly like to see more help being given to women. Unemployment among women aged 50-65 has risen by almost a third in the past two and a half years.
"Then we have older people living in fear at the prospect of the rocketing cost of residential care for when they get into later life.
"The rocketing cost of living is hurting older people. There are people who are having to decide whether to eat or heat. That's a potentially life and death decision which people are wrestling with because the cost of gas and electricity is so high.
"This is a very difficult time for many people over 50.
"That's why we are partnering with Age Concern to help them at a time when they need it most."
Cllr Knight said as the town council's new Older People's Champion, she will ensure that older people in Maghull are given the support they need.
Cllr Knight said: "Lots of older people in our community need help, as the new Maghull Town Council Older People's Champion i will be working with Age Concern to ensure that help is provided to them.
"On everything from learning computer skills to meeting new people over a coffee, Maghull Town Council and Age Concern will give over 50s in Maghull the chance to get involved.
"This is a great partnership which will help us look after the welfare of older people right here in our community."
