AS NOMINATIONS continue to pour in for the Advertiser Sports Awards, one of last year’s winners has praised the annual event for recognising the borough’s sporting stars.
Ormskirk Cricket Club captain Ian Robinson received the Advertiser Sports Personality of the Year Award from Liverpool legend David Fairclough at the last awards in November, 2011.
Ian had led the club to a league and cup double in the Liverpool Competition.
Since then, the club narrowly missed out on more league success, finishing second last season, while Ian was named the club’s First XI Player of the Year at the Winter Ball in November.
Now, with anticipation building for this year’s Advertiser Sports Awards on Friday, April 19, at Edge Hill, Ian reflected on the honour of being recognised last year. He said: “It was a great night. The awards cater for a lot of people and are quite diverse. They bring together a whole range of people from different sports. It was great to be nominated, I really didn’t expect to win looking at who I was up against – the likes of [Lancashire cricketer] Simon Kerrigan and [motor racing driver] Sean Huyton. I was delighted really.”
Nominations are currently open for readers to put forward their sporting heroes from West Lancs in the past year.
The full list of categories is: Sports Personality of the Year; Junior Sports Personality of the Year; Team of the Year; Coach of the Year; Junior Team of the Year; Hall of Fame trophy; Sports Student of the Year (to be awarded by Edge Hill); disability inclusion; disability achievement; lifetime achievement and Unsung Hero.
The awards are organised by the Advertiser in association with Edge Hill University and the West Lancs Disability Sports Forum.
