TOMATO growers Flavourfresh Nursery are enjoying a juicy harvest and will be supplying Asda with more than 670 tonnes of tomatoes this year.
The wave of hot weather has seen a boom for British tomato growers, who were facing a glum summer after one of the coldest starts to a year on record.
The prolonged sunny spell has also seen Britons embrace salads more than usual with Asda selling an additional 45 trucks full of tomatoes, up 30%, and volume sales of iceberg lettuce up 105% compared to 2012. FlavourFresh Nursery in Banks has won awards for its tomatoes at national competitions and has expanded substantially over the years. The company is now one of the leading salad producers in the UK, providing salad for many supermarket chains.
Damien Gray, from Asda's tomato team, said: "2013 will go down as one of the best summers in recent history and what better way to celebrate than with some great British produce? Our tomatoes are growing in abundance and are juicier than ever."
