AN UNLUCKY punter turned would-be robber last week as he tried to steal cash from an Ormskirk bookmakers.
The customer arrived at the shop thinking he had won a small fortune at Ladbrokes on Moor Street in the town centre and went to collect his winnings from the counter.
But the staff told him he was mistaken and he had in fact won nothing.
When he realised his mistake the man became violent and punched the young cashier who was manning the store before trying to grab cash from behind the counter.
The cashier, who was the only member of staff left in the store, managed to call the police while under attack.
The police arrived at the shop around 9.05pm last Thursday and arrested a man who was subsequently charged with attempted robbery.
The male cashier, who does not wish to be named, was also taken to the police station to give his statement about the incident while police reviewed CCTV.
His girlfriend who was expecting him home later that evening became worried when he didn’t arrive and despite calling him repeatedly she received no answer.
The cashier was not badly hurt in the attack but was left shaken.
A 35-year-old man has appeared at Preston Magistrates Court charged with attempted robbery. Ladbrokes declined to comment.
