A COUPLE have turned their house and garden into a winter wonderland in an effort to raise money for a children’s hospice.
Babs and Terry Cunliffe have transformed their Bickerstaffe home to raise money for Zoe’s Place in Liverpool.
The couple decided to start raising money for children’s charities after they lost their grandson when he was just a couple of days old.
Babs and Terry started doing raffles and fundraising events before they decided to light up their home during the festive period.
That was 40 years ago and ever since the display has expanded and expanded raising thousands of pounds for local charities – last year alone they raised £1,600 for Zoe’s Place.
This year’s lights were switched on Saturday evening and hundreds flocked to see this year’s spectacle.
Staff and patients from Zoe’s hospice were among those who came to see the lights and were astounded by the display.
Terry said: “Lots of people came out over the weekend to see the lights and the switch-on went really well, there were no hiccups thankfully.
“It’s just grown and grown over the years, there’s thousands and thousands of lights involved and it’s a lot of work but when you see the people’s faces who come to look around it’s all worth it.
“The display isn’t just on the house itself it goes all through the garden like a big fairy glen and there’s lots of different features.
“I don’t know exactly how much money we’ve raised for the various charities, including Ormskirk Hospital, but it must be quite a few thousand.
“Our house has become quite famous in West Lancashire and we have people from across the area coming to visit us, one couple even come from the Isle of Wight.”
“Cars have to park on both sides of the road and sometimes you cant see the grass on the garden there’s that many people looking at the lights.
“We just want to say thank you to the public who support us every year.”
The Cunliffe’s address is 15 Lathom Road, Bickerstaffe and people can see the lights every night from 5pm - 10pm until January 6.
