AN ANIMAL sanctuary was left without power twice over the festive period – leaving the rescue animals in a critical condition.
On December 30, staff at the Woodlands Animal Sanctuary were finishing putting the animals to bed for the night, when the electricity pole began to spark and burst into flames.
Luckily, the fire burnt out before the fire service arrived but the sanctuary was left in darkness with no electricity or heat.
The electricity problems struck again on January 7, with the whole area around the sanctuary plunged into darkness, leaving Woodlands without power yet again. Fortunately, the sanctuary had an emergency generator which provided power to the vulnerable animals – however, the generator couldn’t be left unattended, meaning a very long night for rescue centre staff until the power returned at 5am.
Vickie McDerby, from Woodlands Animal Sanctuary, said: “There are up to 350 animals in the sanctuary. At the moment, we have a small builder’s generator which we borrowed as a back-up but it’s not good enough because it needs fuel every two hours.
“The animals become critical without heat and they could die, especially the likes of hedgehogs and kittens, so we urgently need to raise £3,500 for a new generator.”
The sanctuary will be holding a grand Spring Ball on Saturday, March 1, at the Royal Clifton Hotel, in Southport, to raise funds for the charity. The event will start at 7pm and a three-course dinner and wine will be served from 7.30pm, followed by entertainment from a band called Decoy.
Vickie said: “The money raised from the event will mainly help towards the running cost of the sanctuary, so we have to double what we raise to be able to buy a generator.
“At the moment, we only have 20 volunteers that work at the shelter and help us to fundraise. They’re brilliant, but we need to treble the number of people that work with us.”
Tickets for the ball cost £35. For more information, call the Sanctuary on 01704 823293 or email info@ animalsanctuary.org.uk
