Hundreds attend Skelmersdale Christmas lights switch-on

CHRISTMAS got off to a flying start in Skelmersdale with the Christmas lights switch on as hundreds of people came along to see the show.

Now let’s make this year the best Christmas ever at this crucial time for local businesses.

Concourse Shopping Centre bosses are still totting up the figures but they believe the number of people attending the extravaganza was up on last year.

Young Advertiser reader Leona Byrne, five, was the winner of the Advertiser competition to turn on the lights.

The St John’s Primary School pupil won a box full of goodies and a family pass to Farmer Ted’s Farm Park.

Proud mum Monika, of Fairhaven, Birch Green, said: “Leona was absolutely delighted to have won the Advertiser competition. She took all the goodies she won into the school to share them with her class and now we are planning the trip to Farmer Ted’s Farm Park.

Titan the singing Robot was a big hit with everyone who attended, including West Lancashire Mayor Cllr Geoff Roberts who made a special effort to have his picture taken with the robot.

There was plenty of other entertainment on show for people, including Bjorn the Polar Bear and Bruce and his amazing Santa Show.

Rev Mick Neal from the Ecumenical Centre joined the dignitaries on stage to remind people of the real Christmas story.

Other well-known faces on the stage included West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper and Cllr Roberts.

They joined the compere in encouraging everyone to join in the countdown for the lights to go on. Then everyone cheered as the lever was pushed down and the lights went on.

Joanne Benyon, from the Concourse Shopping Centre, said: “We were really pleased with the number of people who came along to the Christmas lights switch on. Traders have told us they were very pleased with how the night went.

“I would urge people to come along this Christmas to support their local traders. We need to support our local traders as that is what gives the centre such variety.
