SKELMERSDALE South Councillor Doreen Saxon died on Monday after a short illness, aged 72.
Cllr Saxon had represented the ward since 2003 and was also chairman of the Greenhill Community Centre management committee.
The mother-of-two had played a leading role in creating this centre for local people.
She was recognised for her work in the community at a Parliamentary Reception in 2006 where she received a Local Heroes Award.
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper paid tribute, saying: “Doreen was a lovely person who was held in high esteem as a friend and Councillor. She was a great community activist who was very vocal in standing up for her community. Doreen was known by and helped so many people. She will be much missed.”
Labour Group leader cllr Paul Cotterill said: “Doreen was, quite simply, a fine woman. She was deeply committed to her local community.”
Cllr Saxon is survived by her two daughters Donna and Lisa and grandchildren Kyle, Jessica, and Grace.
Her funeral will take place at St Paul’s Church, Skelmersdale at 2.15pm on Wednesday 7th April.
There will only be family flowers but donations can be made to Queenscourt Hospice.
