Staff, residents and family members at an Aughton nursing home were given the chance to literally have their cake and eat it during their first cupcake competition this week. Ten keen bakers rose to the challenge of creating individually designed cupcakes, whilst staff and residents of Silver Birch Lodge, enjoyed an afternoon of communal cake eating fun.

Owner and manager of the home, Joan Parr, said: “We organise daily communal activities for residents to enjoy and take part in.

“We thought it would be nice to involve families and staff – the more the merrier, it all adds to the fun. Everyone had a great afternoon so it’s definitely something we’ll do again.”

The cakes were judged by the resident cook Louise Barrow and an independent friend of the home, Sally Edgar, who had the job of awarding prizes for the cakes with the best taste and best presentation. Louise said: “I was amazed by the work that had gone into some of these edible creations, they all looked too good to eat!”

The winning cakes went to Sandra McDonald for best taste and Lauren Crossley for best presentation.
