More space for shoppers in Skelmersdale as Sandy Lane car park set for extension

SANDY Lane car park will be extended in a £63,000 council project.

The scheme was announced at a meeting of full council on Wednesday.

The funding was made available due to a projected £500,000 underspend in the financial year and will see around 40 more parking spaces created. Conservative Cllr Adrian Owens welcomed the scheme, revealed by Cllr David Westley, portfolio holder for finance, to provide more space for shoppers.

And Skelmersdale North Labour Cllr Neil Furey asked whether the council would now be dropping the “needless” pay and display plans for Sandy Lane in light of the £500,000 underspend.

But Cllr Westley said that he was being “rather naive” as the car parking charges were a way of generating recurring income, not just for the current year.
