Speaker John Bercow has said he is "warmly grateful" to Nigel Evans for three years service as a Deputy Speaker after the Ribble Valley MP quit after it emerged that he is to be charged with sex offences against seven men.
Mr Bercow said he had accepted Mr Evans' formal letter of resignation and details of an election for a replacement will be given when the Commons returns in October after the party conferences.
He said: "I have received his resignation with sadness. I wish to thank Nigel for his three years of service to the House as Deputy Speaker, in which he has proved to be highly competent, fair and good-humoured.
"He has been a loyal and valued member of the team of deputy speakers who assist me in chairing our proceedings.
"I am warmly grateful to him."
