After starting the season early last August it came down to the final match of a long hard season with Hesketh Bank knowing they had to beat Turton FC to be crowned as champions of the West Lancashire League Division One.

Leading scorer John Stead eased the nerves when he was on hand in the 29th minute to slot home from close range from a slide rule cross from skipper Dan Birkby. The skipper added a second in the 41st minute knocking in a rebound off the home keeper.

When Stead powered home a header from a corner from Jordan Smethurst to make it 3-0 on the hour it looked likely that the win required would be a formality.

Turton on the other hand had other ideas and within five minutes found the back of the net twice. The first from the penalty spot when Adam Thompson was adjudged to have pushed a Turton forward and minutes later he put through his own goal deflecting a vicious cross past Sergeant.

With Turton powering forward manager Smith took off striker Stead and brought on centre half Morris to strengthen the defence. In the 81st minute Richard Burns broke clear on the break and was brought down in the box by a desperate tackle.

He dusted himself off and coolly dispatched the resulting penalty into the corner of the net. The referee added on 11 minutes injury time but the Turton players began to lose their discipline and he sent off two of their players for descent so the league title was safely won and the league and cup double duly achieved.

For the record Hesketh Bank won 22 of their 30 league games, drawing five and losing just three with 83 goals scored and 28 conceded.

The reserves finished their league season on Saturday with a 4-1 win at Slyne-with-Hest to finish in fourth spot. John Ascroft added two more to his tally giving him 25 for the season and the other two goals coming from Jordan Smethurst and Tony Sergeant.
