Sponsorship deal is not to be sneezed at

Young players with the West Lancs Spartans basketball club have won the support of local employers SCA to hit the heights with their training.

The tissue makers’ Skelmersdale mill has provided the funds for the club to buy new training bibs for the teams, who are based at Glenburn Sports College in Skelmersdale.

Mill manager Mark Mannering went along to present the new kit and watch the young players in action during a training session.

“It was great to see such enthusiasm for the sport,” he said. “The club has some really skilful players who are very promising up and coming stars of the future. We are proud to be able to help.”

The club has only been in existence for just over a year but already has around 50 members. It was started by coach Gavin Dunne, a former player with the Chester Jets, now renamed Cheshire Phoenix.

Gavin said: “Basketball is a very popular sport in this country now and we’re the only club in Skelmersdale. There’s a great demand and the membership has mushroomed since the club was launched.

“We want to make it accessible to everyone who wants to join and so getting the help of SCA in buying kit for us has been an enormous boost.”

The SCA mill on Pimbo Road produces paper tissues, including the wellknown household brand Velvet and own brand products for leading supermarket chains. Other SCA brands include TENA, Bodyform, Cushelle and Plenty.
