Saf Signs for Ormskirk

Ormskirk Ladies celebrated the New Year by announcing their latest signing.  Highly rated young front row forward Safina Clay signed for Ormskirk Ladies on her 18th Birthday and cannot wait to make her debut in senior rugby. She said: "I’ve been playing rugby for around six years now and I love everything about the sport. I’ve watched Ormskirk play a couple of  times and I’ve been to a few training sessions to meet the players and I’m looking forward to playing for this great club."

Safina is a product of Liverpool St Helens’ Girls Rugby section and has represented Lancashire at both U15s and U18 in recent years and Ormskirk coach John Foster hinted that Safina could be the first of many new signings from the rich vein of talent that has been developed in Lancashire. "We are delighted to capture Safina’s signature at Ormskirk and hopefully she will be the first of many local players stepping up into senior rugby. Front row forwards of this calibre and experience are extremely rare in the Women’s game and she will definitely add some power to our pack. She’s a pretty dedicated rugby player, she actually turned up for training on her 18th birthday to sign for Ormskirk Ladies and we are hoping that Saf will make her home debut in our league game versus Sunderland Flames on 19th January."

Women’s rugby has been growing rapidly over the last few years and the trend is set to continue with the Women’s Rugby World Cup which takes place in France in August 2014, so it is expected that interest levels will surge. "Edge Hill University and all three Liverpool Universities have all reported record numbers of females playing rugby union this year and we are working closely with the universities to signpost interested players to the appropriate clubs. But rugby is a game for everyone, we have teachers, accountants, shop assistants, office workers, a prison officer and a few medical professionals playing for Ormskirk Ladies, so if you are a female over 18 and fancy giving rugby a try, there really couldn’t be a better time to join up."
