Tarleton Cricket Club’s second XI are celebrating lifting the 2014 Pochin Cup.
In a high-scoring affair in which almost 400 runs were scored, Tarleton defeated Churchtown by 117 runs.
Richard Chicken’s magnificent all-round performance was the key to victory for the team from the Northern Parishes.
Chicken smashed 86 from just 72 deliveries and then took 4-14 as Tarleton ran out comfortable victors over Churchtown.
Batting first after losing the toss in blustery conditions, openers Nick Aspinall (51) and Krishan Parmar (16) put on 70 for the first wicket, before Churchtown hit back with four wickets to leave the score at 128-4.
However, a quickfire stand of 72 between Chicken and number six batsman Jake Abram (34) established Tarleton’s innings. And a late flurry from Chicken and Andy Cropper (17 not out) led Tarleton to an impressive 256-6 from their 40 overs at the crease.
It was always going to be a tough ask for Churchtown but they did set a good tempo early after tea, reaching 44-2 after seven overs.
But Chicken (4-14) and Cropper (2-31) tore through the Churchtown middle order as they lost five wickets for just three runs and collapsed with almost 200 still needed.
Parmar wrapped up the innings with a couple of run-outs, leaving Churchtown 139 all out.
On Saturday, Tarleton’s first XI secured a vital victory over Newburgh in the Southport & District Amateur Cricket League’s Premier Division.
In a low-scoring affair, Tarleton were 100 all out.
However, Newburgh fell to just 72 all out as Tarleton regained eighth place in the table and put some distance between themselves and the relegation zone.
Dave Huyton hit 32 with the bat, including a crucial 24-run last-wicket stand with number 11 Chris Buck, before taking three wickets to finish off Newburgh’s innings.
Mike Harrison, Jamie Tabord and Buck all took a couple of wickets apiece.
