Football isn’t just from August to May – there are thriving competitions going on for 52 weeks of the year.
That’s the message from the organisers of the community football league in Skelmersdale, and players can join thousands of others by joining up for free throughout August, meaning a saving of £25.
With the football season starting up and down the country last weekend and the Premier League set to join their football league counterparts on Saturday you could be forgiven for thinking that football was just a winter sport, but as Leisure Leagues executive manager Chris Rowntree explained, for the players in the six-a-side league at Glenburn Sports College, that was far from the case.
“We are very proud that our leagues go on all year round. There is no closed season here! Our players look forward to playing each week, and there is absolutely no need for a break.”
Indeed, even during footballs down time Leisure Leagues have continued to grow.
Latest figures show that the company attracted over 5000 new players in July, meaning that in excess of 40,000 footballers each week are regularly competing in leagues up and down the country. Chris added: “We are very pleased with the fact that nearly 700 teams signed up in July, which obviously is far from being a traditional football month, it is an increase 62% on the same period last year.”
There are, in Chris’s opinion a number of reasons for this: “The World Cup was a factor in keeping interest levels high, with people enjoying the games and wanting to replicate what they have seen on tv, but also there is no doubt that the popularity of 5 and 6 a side football continues to grow to new heights every year.”
In addition to the free entry offer, players can look forward to top class equipment, qualified referees and award-winning organisation.
