Tarleton through to last four of Shield

MCC in trouble early on despite winning the toss

Sandhurst Shield Quarter Final

Tarleton (144-8) beat Merseyside Commonwealth Conference (143 all out) by 2 wickets

Tarleton first XI set up a semi-final Sandhurst Shield clash with Prescot and Odyssey after both teams won their quarter final games on Sunday.

At Carr Lane, Tarleton dodged weather interruptions to record a tight two-wicket victory over Merseyside Commonwealth Conference.

Despite winning the toss, MCC lost wickets at regular intervals and found themselves in trouble at 79-8.

Sam Wilkinson picked up four wickets, whilst Jamie Tabord and Chris Buck weighed in with two wickets apiece.

But the last two wickets added 64 crucial runs as the hosts posted 143 all out.

Tarleton were on course for victory at 91-5 when rain intervened, but head-to-head comparison of the scores at that point had MCC six runs ahead, despite losing more wickets, and heading for the next round.

The players were able to resume briefly and as the rain swept in again, skipper Paul Higham looked to have secured victory for Tarleton with a huge six over midwicket moments before play was halted.

But the rain once again cleared and Higham (18 not out) guided Tarleton home with two wickets to spare, scoring the winning run at 8:45pm.

Meanwhile, on Carr Lane’s back pitch, a youthful Sunday team put up a spirited display against New Longton.

An exclusively under 15 bowling attack restricted New Longton to 175 all out.

Lewis Johnson and Matthew Clayton took three wickets each, whilst Daniel Clayton took three catches.

Tarleton came up short at 103 all out.

Tarleton always welcomes new members of all ages and abilities.

SADACL Premier Division

Southport Trinity (175-6) beat Tarleton (104 all out) by 71 runs

On Saturday Tarleton first XI avoided the rain at Southport Trinity’s The Rookery, but fell to defeat by 71 runs.

After a 45 minute delay at the start of the game, batting first the hosts declared on 175-6 after securing maximum batting points.

Captain Bobby Eyes top scored with 37 and some hard hitting from Joe Damen (33) helped the hosts to a strong first innings lead, after Geoff Gray’s 3 wickets had initially restricted the hosts to 58-4.

Dave Thompson hit 4 boundaries as Tarleton started brightly but wickets in successive balls triggered a collapse.

Tarleton’s Will Taylor scored a superb century in this fixture last year, but was caught behind first ball off Colin Maxwell as Tarleton limped to 30-5.

Some lower order hitting from Mike Harrison (22), and stubborn resistance from skipper Paul Higham (35 not out) couldn’t prevent a defeat as the visitors were bowled out for 104.

Unfortunately, both Tarleton 2nd and 3rd XI games were abandoned after torrential rain on Saturday morning.
