SOUTHPORT Model Railway Society will be presenting its 39th Annual Model Railway Exhibition next weekend (September 29-30), taking place at Birkdale High School for the fifth year running, writes Michael Hincks.
With a wide variety of exhibitors, traders and societies contributing towards the show, it promises to be the perfect ticket for families and model enthusiasts alike.
The exhibition boasts a total of 21 specially invited layouts from across the north of England, Wales and down to Calne in Wiltshire. Additionally, two members of the society, Derek Pratt and Peter Clare, will be displaying their layouts for the first time, entitled Walmer Bridge and Blitztschnell-Bahn respectively.
Traders will be selling everything from model materials to memorabilia, while visitors with a sweet-tooth will be catered for with an all-new stand, Sweets of Yesteryear.
Exhibition manager, Tony Kuivala, is looking forward to another successful year. He said: “We had over 2,000 people last year and we are getting a great amount of support from all over the modelling community.
“A lot of families are now coming which is excellent to see and in recent years we have seen a rise in the number of ladies and girls turning up. It is very much down to the social atmosphere of the event and I would like to thank the school for helping out and providing the perfect ambience.”
On it being their 39th year, Tony said: “We are stronger now than we have been for 20 years and we already have a few things planned for our 40th anniversary, though we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
