Burscough FC caretaker boss Chris Myers says players must stake claim for next year

CARETAKER manager Chris Myers believes the Burscough players can stake a claim for next season on Saturday.

The relegated Linnets welcome Blyth Spartans to Victoria Park for the final fixture of the Blue Square North season with Myers determined his side go out with a bang.

Drafted in for the remaining three games of the campaign following the resignation of Andy Mutch, Myers says the squad have the opportunity to impress any potential new manager watching from the stands.

A 4-0 loss at Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday confirmed the Greens’ relegation to the UniBond Premier Division next season and was followed up by a 3-0 defeat at AFC Telford United on Tuesday.

The club confirmed they have received a number of applications for the vacant manager’s position at Victoria Park with the deadline next Friday, May 1.

Myers said: “My brief from the club was to try and get the players to stick together, we know it has been tough but we just want to get a reaction and stay positive.

“Is Saturday an opportunity for player to stake a claim for next season? Definitely. The club are advertising for a new manager and he could be in the stands watching on Saturday, so the lads who want to stay at Burscough need to put in a performance for themselves, the supporters and the club.

"We want to go out on a high, we are not just going out for the sake of it. Both myself and Dom Morley (caretaker assistant manager) will not let it be that way, we both have the same attitude and the lads know what is expected.
