Burscough boss Derek Goulding delighted with derby win

DEREK GOULDING hopes his Burscough team can continue to draw in the crowds after their free-scoring football helped them to a derby victory over Skelmersdale United.

The Linnets inflicted the first league defeat of the season on Tommy Lawson’s side with a 4-1 win on Tuesday night at Victoria Park.

And in the process, Burscough went top of the scoring charts in the Evo-Stik First Division North with 58 goals from their 25 games.

More than 250 supporters watched the midweek win over Skem and Goulding hopes they return for this weekend’s game with Harrogate Railway Athletic.

“We have been scoring plenty of goals and going into this weekend we are now the highest scorers in the division,” said the Burscough manager.

“Throughout my managerial career I have always set my teams up to go and win games and you win games by scoring goals.

“Playing in that manner is something I have always implemented wherever I’ve been.

“In my first spell at Burscough I remember a couple of 6-3 or 6-4 games and it was the same at AFC Liverpool.

“It is just the way I prefer my teams to play and this season we are scoring as many as the top teams.”

Burscough got off to a flying start against Skem, racing into a 2-0 lead after just minutes thanks to goals from Louis Mayers and Niall Cummins.

Warren Bellew reduced the deficit just before the break but second half goals from Jordan Williams and Liam Caddick sealed a memorable win for Goulding’s men.

“With it being a derby we really wanted to come out on top and it was nice to become the first side to defeat Skem in the league this season,” said Goulding.
