Linnets raid rivals

A BUSY week has seen much activity in the transfer market at Burscough.

Manager Andy Gray revealed the news as players gathered last Saturday for their first pre-season training session.

Gray said: “There was a good turnout on Saturday and it all went well.”

Last week, the Advertiser revealed how the Linnets had picked up central midfielder from local rivals Skelmersdale United. This week, the Burscough boss revealed how a number of other players have put pen to paper at Victoria Park.

Striker Darren Byers has joined the club from Prescot Cables while Darren Brookfield has signed from Marine.

Promising 20-year-old goalkeeper Zak Jones has also been acquired. He has gained early experience in the youth set-up at Blackburn Rovers. On Tuesday night, Burscough also inked central defenders Farrell Kilbane and James Connolly to contracts.

Speaking about signing the two centre-backs, Gray said: “It’s great for Burscough that Farrell and James have joined us. They could well be our two rocks we need at the back.”

The manager added: “There is a really nice feeling and atmosphere around the club. We all want to make Burscough the best team in the area.”

In draws made yesterday, the Linnets could face either Silsden, Colne, Abbey Hey or Hallam in the FA Cup’s first qualifying round on September 12. In the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy on October 17 Burscough will visit either Curzon Ashton or Brigg Town.
