AUGHTON’S Sean Huyton is just one point away from clinching the Ginetta GT5 championship after securing almost maximum points at Silverstone last weekend.
The 22-year-old scored three wins from three pole positions, posting fastest laps in two races to bag 109 points and put him within a whisker of the title.
His nearest rival, Mike Robinson, is now 110 points behind meaning Huyton merely has to secure one pole, one fastest lap or simply finish in one of the three remaining races to be champion.
It would be his first car racing title, since graduating from karting four years ago, where he won numerous regional and national championships.
He said: “Silverstone couldn’t have gone better and I’m itching to get to the final race meeting at Donnington Park.
“In all three races the car was brilliant and I can’t thank my team, Academy Motorsport, enough for giving me the perfect package all weekend.
“Although the title is just one point away, I’ll be preparing for it like any other race meeting and trying to win every race.”
In the first race at Silverstone Huyton led from the start and gradually increased his lead to finish almost four seconds ahead of championship rival Robinson.
Race two followed a similar pattern as Huyton dominated from the front, but as he extended his lead over Robinson, the latter made a mistake with two laps remaining eventually finishing 15th to give Huyton an additional points advantage in the championship.
The final race of the weekend saw Huyton continue to dominate and as Robinson struggled to make the top ten, the Aughton racer finished over seven seconds clear of Rick Parfitt for the hat-trick of wins.
Huyton added: “I know many friends and family will be at Donington Park to watch the final three races of the season and I want to give them some great racing and obviously results!
“Racing has been a huge part of my life for years, at times a real struggle, but the support of family and friends has helped through good times and bad so hopefully we’ll all be celebrating after Donington Park
“I must also thank Matt and the team at Academy Motorsport who I’ve been with for all of my car racing career and have helped me progress to where we are now.”
