WITH four games of the season left Ormskirk second team were looking to consolidate their position at the top of Division Four, with a trip to North Meols Leisure Centre against St Cuthbert’s third team. With Tarleton second team lying in second place only two points behind, this game was a must win.
Ormskirk however fielded a weakened side with two of their regulars unavailable, but Mark Lang-Yates and Andy Shaw made valuable contributions and proved worthy replacements.
Ian McFegan and Jane Hughes started proceedings with a win against S Bennet and S Tinsley in the first of the mixed, with the St Cuthbert’s pair going close to taking the event to three games. Mike Kirby and Emily Glancy had a slightly easier task beating T Oshinowo and L Davies.
The next event was a closer affair between Andy Shaw and Beth Mell of Ormskirk and the St Cuthbert’s pair of R Halsall and D Campbell, but the Ormskirk pair finally asserted themselves and ran out 21-14 winners.
The final mixed game saw Mark Lang-Yates and Hannah Jackson from Ormskirk beat A Oshinowo and S Lewis.
The levels matches continued in much the same vein with Ian McFegan and Mike Kirby winning comfortably against S Bennett and R Halsall. Mark Lang-Yates and Andy Shaw had a tough game against T Oshinowo and A Oshinowo, with the final game of three going the Ormskirk pairs way.
Emily and Jane from Ormskirk eventually saw off the challenge of S Tinsley and L Davies after the St Cuthbert’s pair had come right back into it with a win in the second game. Finally Beth and Hannah from Ormskirk overcame D Campbell and S Lewis in a really tight second game which threatened to take the event to a deciding game.
The final score of 8-0 to Ormskirk keeps them two points clear at the top of Division four with three more games to play.
