Historic race in Skelmersdale

SKELMERSDALE’S Pimbo circuit entered cycling history on Sunday as the opening venue for the country’s first-ever women’s road race league.

The five-race series for Category Two, Three and Four women riders, organised by Cycling Development North West, is the brainchild of Heather Bamforth, who, after competing on Sunday, said: “I feel really emotional about today’s success. We anticipated only 15 riders, but we had 53. That shows the potential for women’s road racing, which can only get stronger. We hope the rest of the country will take a lead from what we’ve done in the North West.”
