THE senior members from the West Lancs Karate Academy travelled to Grimsby to attend a special weekend training course under the instruction of Sensei Dirk Heene (8th Dan).
Sensei Heene is the head of the worldwide Kase Academy and flew in from Belgium to take the course, exploring advanced elements of kata bunkai. Although gruelling, the course is in line with the club’s philosophy of providing access to the very best in instruction, having in the last 12 months given members access to instructors from Serbia, Canada, Japan and the UK, both at the club itself and on courses.
The club’s senior men’s team were crowned national kumite champions in 2012, capitalising on the calibre of teaching to which they are privileged to gain access, including that of Sensei Heene who is a former European champion.
Sensei Heene has been mentoring the senior club members for many years and this latest course allowed him to provide further guidance, along with selecting West Lancs instructor Hayley Willis to demonstrate how the techniques should be done to the hundred plus other karateka in attendance from across the UK.
