MARIA Reynolds, instructor at WLM Taekwondo, has led by example by becoming National Champion in the -67kg advanced adult female division.
The British National Championships were held over two days at the Manchester Velodrome.
Maria was one of a team of three from the club, all of whom excelled against some of Britain’s elite fighters.
Ben Pearce, aged 12 from Aughton, won a bronze medal in the -37kg Cadet division, after two hard fought victories.
Ben was beaten at the semi-final stage by the eventual winner, who also happened to be the reigning European champion.
Seven year old Mia Hadfield – Maria’s niece – won three fights on her way to a gold medal and become National Champion in the female children’s -20kg division.
These results are especially impressive, considering that the club – whose membership has grown rapidly to more than 150 – has only begun competing seriously in national level sparring events in the last two years. The club is ambitious to build on these results and aims to send more competitors to next year’s National Championships.
It is also a personal achievement for Maria, who is one of the club’s founding instructors. Maria is now setting her sights on international success, and is hoping to attract the necessary funding so that she may compete at the Croatian Open on November 9 and 10.l
WLM Taekwondo is family run martial arts club, based in Kirkby, Lydiate, Ormskirk, Burscough and Aughton.
