Ormskirk Badminton Club - 1st and 2nd teams
AFTER 40 years of badminton, season 2013-2014 has finally seen two Ormskirk Badminton Club teams competing together in the same Division.
Following promotion last season from Division 4 Ormskirk second team finally caught up with their club rivals Ormskirk firsts to compete with them in Division 3 of the Southport and District Badminton League.
Wednesday evening saw an historic match when the two Ormskirk teams competed against each other for the first time in their history.
Ormskirk firsts were the clear favourites going into the match sitting at the top of the table following a fine start to the campaign, but this didn't stop the second team from having aspirations for greater things.
Both teams fielded their first choice line ups but the seconds had two players (Glancy and Jackson) carrying injuries but who were determined not to miss the occasion.
The first team suffered an injury early on when Mike Lyon was forced to retire and they had to call on a substitute.
However experience told in the end and the higher team eventually ran out winners by a score of 6-2 moving them five points clear at the top of the table.
The night started well for the second team when Brad Hughes and Emily Glancy won 2-1 against Mike Lyon and Emma Massey, but this was evened out when Mick Winder and Sue Stockley beat Nathan Hughes and Beth Mell.
From this point the first team asserted their authority and results went their way with R. Morley, J. Massey, E. Massey, S. Grimshaw, S. Stockley and C. Hampson all registering victories. I. McFegan and M. Kirby from the second team made the score 6-2 with a victory against M. Winder and D. Walker.
The match was played in the spirit one would expect between players from the same Club, but with team pride at stake was as competitive as ever with no quarter given from either side.
Both sets of playing are already looking forward to the return fixture later in the season.
