SKELMERSDALE United manager Tommy Lawson has lavished praise on his winning cup final players and the supporters.

United claimed their first trophy in nine years following Tuesday night’s extra-time win over Radcliffe Borough in the final of the Lancashire Co-Operative Challenge Trophy.

Striker Mark Houghton scored in the 117th minute to put Skem 2-1 ahead and on the road to cup glory but as impressed with his players’ determination, Lawson was equally complimentary about the United faithful.

Lawson is now hoping the momentum generated from Tuesday evening’s victory can help his squad push even harder for UniBond First Division North title success, starting with tonight’s match with Woodley Sports.

He said: “The support we had from Skem was absolutely fantastic and they have gone home with great big smiles on their faces. I have had people stopping at my van since the win congratulating us and drivers honking their horns as they have gone past.

"It is a fabulous feeling knowing you have brought a little smile to the people that took the trouble to go on Tuesday night. There was a great atmosphere and that was down to our supporters.

“It was a good night’s work to be honest. Obviously last year was a disappointment if I am honest after getting to two cup finals.
