SKEM won this game in style, but it took them 63 minutes to register their first goal against a very stubborn defence.
In fact the hosts would have you believe that Tom Hardwick’s sending off was the pivotal point in this game.
The fact is, however, that Skem were already in the ascendency as Town were showing signs of tiring anyway.
At the end of the day United’s former favourite prevented Chris Almond from opening up the scoring as he raced clear to go one-on-one with the keeper.
United still had to score from the spot to gain from their advantage, and once again captain Michael White stepped up to slam home the vital opener.
It was pretty much end-to-end stuff in the opening exchanges of the first half, and for much of it Skem looked reluctant to attempt playing football, on what was a poor pitch.
In the 12th minute Town caught Skem on the break. Phil Hadland raced clear down the right wing, and his cross- shot had to be tipped wide by Ryan McMahon and eventually cleared to safety by White.
United absorbed the early pressure well and almost took the lead in the 20th minute when Almond rounded the left back.
With the keeper to beat, Almond attempted a lob and Mottram was fortunate enough to get a fingertip to the ball, leaving Mike Stewart to clear the remaining danger.
