DESPITE an easy ten wicket win over Huyton, Rainford ended the final day of action in Liverpool Competition Division 1 where they had started, in fourth position.
Wins for Newton-le-Willows and Highfield maintained the status quo and took Newton, just four points ahead of Rainford, into the Premier League. Incredibly, only eight points separated the top club, Northop Hall, from Rainford.
Pravin Tambe signed off as the Liverpool Competition’s leading wicket taker with a total of 98 victims following his six wicket haul on Saturday and all at Rainford are looking forward to the return of their Mumbai maestro next year.
Chris Spencer burgled 3 for 24 as Huyton were bowled out for 49, Mike Rimmer (25 not out) and Tom Meredith (24 not out) steering Rainford home.
Rainford 2nd X1 ended the season with a five wicket win at Alder, Chris Bell leading the way home with 38 not out. Phil Curran’s side have been in contention all season and finish in third place in the Merseyside and Southport Alliance Division 2.
Despite the disappointment of both teams narrowly missing out on promotion, Rainford have significantly exceeded their expectations this season and have set their standard for 2009.
However, the best news of all came through last Friday with the granting of planning permission for the proposed extension and new developments to the clubhouse at the Jubilee Recreation Ground.
