More highs and lows for battling Ormskirk
IN another weekend of highs and lows Ormskirk slumped to their third league defeat of the season before advancing to the next round of the Lancashire Knockout.
On Saturday, a poor bowling performance and several dropped catches allowed Lytham to chase down 232 after Adam Waterhouse (51) and Matt Glayzer (44) had led the way with the bat.
But the Blue and Gold bounced back to extend their unbeaten run in all cup competitions this year. John Armstrong’s knock of 79 and a 5 wicket haul from Phil Unsworth proved too much for Greenmount.
Ormskirk were stuck in on Saturday after skipper Waterhouse had lost the toss on a pitch which looked like it would offer some help to the bowlers.
Matt Glayzer and Ian Robinson negotiated the new ball well before Michael Rigby trapped Robinson leg before for (20). Phil Armstrong, promoted to number three in the absence of Simon Kerrigan, scored 13 before he too was trapped in front by Joe Davies.
Glayzer’s watchful innings then came to an end as the left hander misjudged a delivery from Joe Davies and was bowled. Davies, a left arm seamer, then trapped Matt Morgan for a duck before claiming the crucial wicket of John Armstrong for 22.
Having stumbled from 106 for 2 to 130 for 6 after Ian Glayzer became Davies’ fifth victim, Ormskirk desperately needed a partnership to steady the ship.
Jonny Glayzer joined his captain at the crease and the pair crafted an intelligent 58 runs for the seventh wicket. Glayzer was then unlucky to hit a return catch back to Marcus Sharp for a well made 27.
Waterhouse went on to record his second half-century of the season and along with some lusty blows from Nicky Caunce (24*), managed to take his side past 230.
