SKEM Athletic girls closed another eventful chapter in their success story in the season’s finale with a hard fought win against a resilient Euxton Girls.
A fantastic first half strike from skipper Grace Vella was enough to clinch victory for Skem Athletic and conclude a seasons unbeaten run of matches for the League Champions.
The stage was set for a great game, with both sides playing their part in an action packed encounter to end the season on a high.
Grace Vella stole the show right from the off with her intuitive midfield display, punctuated by a superb curling free kick on five minutes which whistled into the top corner of the net.
Euxton replied with resilient play from a well organised side, but Skem never sat back, continuing to press Euxton at every opportunity and were unlucky not to add to their tally with numerous goal scoring chances before the break.
With the second half quickly underway Skem took firm control of the game with slick movement all over the pitch, moving the ball quickly in midfield to enable the strikers to make attacking runs at the Euxton defence with every forward move.
Skem began to dominate the play throughout the second period, every girl involved in the quest to find the elusive second goal.
Once again, wingers Abigail and Mayumi played a huge part in this tight encounter, giving Athletic that extra fire power down the flanks to mount further pressure on the Euxton back line.
Skem continued to press Euxton in all areas of the pitch throughout the second half, even with the majority of possession and superb all round play, a second goal wasn’t to be for the home side, the decisive first half strike from Captain Grace Vella taking the win for Skem to end the season firm Champions and signing off with a astonishing unbeaten run of league matches throughout the season, scoring a season’s total of 87 goals and winning the League with outstanding performances from each and every player. A great big well done from all the parents, management and coaches of Skem Athletic for a job well done and for all your hard work and dedication throughout a long hard season.
