COUNTY cricket comes to Skelmersdale for the first time next week Tuesday, when Lancashire take on Worcestershire in the national 2XI One-day Trophy.

And in another first for Skelmersdale Cricket Club and its well-appointed Scott Rees Park ground, a white ball – rather than the usual red – will be used at for the very first time.

Skelmersdale already hosts regular junior representative matches and club members are thrilled to have now been chosen to stage a senior county representative match.

“It’s a great honour” says club president Alan Pheasant, “not only for ourselves, but for the whole town.

“We hope as many locals as possible will join cricket lovers from across the region and make it an occasion to remember.

“Skelmersdale Cricket Club has been around since 1891, but we’ve been at Scott Rees Park for less than 10 years so we’ve come a long way in a short space of time.

“We are all looking forward to the big day and, of course, a Lancashire win.”

The 50 overs-a-side clash gets underway at 11am, with Lancashire expected to field several young players with either first team experience or designs on a place, including Gareth Cross, Steve Mullaney and Ormskirk spinner Simon Kerrigan.

Scott Rees Park is on the A577 Blaguegate Lane between Skelmersdale and Ormskirk.

A limited amount of car parking is available, though spectators are urged to use public transport where possible - ring the travel line on 0870 6082 608 or visit www.arrivabus.co.uk
