THE battle for promotion from the second division of the Liverpool Competition is going down to the wire.
Three teams, Burscough, Birkenhead Park and Parkfield Liscard, are all in the hunt as the countdown gets under way to this weekend's final fixtures of the season.
But at this moment in time third-placed Burscough look to be the rank outsiders in the race for top and runners-up spot.
They have 264 points from their 19 matches - five adrift of Parkfield and 20 behind leaders Birkenhead Park whom they visit on Saturday.
Parkfield, on the other hand, have what looks likely an easy away fixtures at struggling Old Xaverians.
Burscough kept their slim promotion hopes alive with a crushing 129 run home victory over fourth-placed Skelmersdale and at the same time ended their neighbours bid for a top two finish.
Batting first, the hosts smashed 238-5 declared with opener Lee Berrie (98) and Brendan Domigan (97) tearing the Skelmersdale bowling attack apart.
Their 166 run second wicket partnership left the visitors a mountain to climb and despite battling their way into the last 10 overs were eventually dismissed for 109 (Chris Andrews 3-24, Phil Unsworth 2-8, Gary Taylor 2-20, Matty White 2-21, Domigan 1-32).
