THE first ten minutes of Ormskirk RUFC’s match against Moore was played at a furious pace.
The first points came following a period of pressure in Moore’s half forcing a penalty within Alex Lambie’s kicking range, he duly slotted the ball between the posts giving Ormskirk a 3-0 lead.
From this point Ormskirk’s confidence was up and the first try of the game was scored by inside centre Neil Habberfield following a strong weaving break through Moore’s defence, Lambie converted taking the score to 10-0.
The next 15 minutes saw Ormskirk dominate, producing slick moves in the backs and showing good strength up front.
The last 10 minutes of the half saw Moore with the majority of possession but an organised Ormskirk defence and a good tackling display from flankers Hitchlock and Roberts and centres Griffiths and Habberfield kept the visitors out and the score remained 22-0 at half time.
The Gingerbread men’s dominance continued and following a great 40 metre break from Ball, Roberts was able to set up Phil Davies who elegantly dove over the line. Just three minutes later Hodson completed a neat passage of play and add a further five points, Lambie converted both tries and the score now stood at 43-0.
Kirk were unrelenting and inspired by a series of thunderous breaks from the back of the scrum by Purcell, increased their lead. Firstly through a great solo effort from Hodson in which he evaded countless tackles to weave and wriggle his way from the half way line to Moore’s try line, gaining his hat-trick. Secondly and finally, Charlton crossed the line after a period of good dynamic forwards play.
Illingworth converted both tries, and as the final whistle blew the score stood at a resounding 57-0.
This performance certainly underlines Ormskirk’s intension for promotion this season. If they can re-create this type of performance on opponents soil then this dream could certainly become a reality.
