Derek Goulding is happy with Burscough’s progress

DEREK GOULDING says he is pleased with his Burscough side’s progression this season, but hopes they can continue to develop and improve in the coming weeks.

The Linnets followed up their impressive 6-1 win over Harrogate Railway Athletic on Saturday with a resilient defensive display at Trafford on Tuesday evening, securing a well-earned goalless draw against a side that has been in free-scoring form this season.

It leaves the Greens in 10th place in the Evo-Stik First Division North, and Goulding says he is satisfied with their form so far in this campaign, having suffered the ignominy of relegation last season.

“I’m pretty pleased at the moment,” he said. “It’s the kind of progression we have been looking for, and I have been talking about.

“We are starting to get the feel that we can go into games and win them. The draws and the wins are starting to outweigh the defeats, and that is a positive to build upon.

“The trick now is to take that next step and to keep progressing. If we can get a win against one of the top sides, then that would be evidence of that.

“We played against one of the better sides in the league in Trafford on Tuesday, and we could well have won the game, so there are a lot of positives to take.”

Goulding is especially pleased at the increased firepower available to him currently.

Burscough completed a deal to bring back Will Jones from Nantwich Town last week, and the striker repaid their faith with two goals against Harrogate.

With Liam Caddick and the highly-rated Niall Cummins also in their ranks, Goulding believes his side are capable of scoring in any game.

“It’s always nice to finish teams off like we did on Saturday,” he said. “It is good to have Will Jones back, he will be a good signing for us. He’s had a taste of football at this level and I think he will get better and better as he plays more games.

“To come from amateur football, as he did, and play in the Evo-Stik is difficult, but he’s developing well and we’re glad to have him back. With Liam, whose goals have been a real bonus, and Niall there too, we are well stocked for goals at the moment.”

He added: “I’m probably a bit greedy in that I would have liked a few more points than we’ve got, maybe to have turned a couple of draws into wins.

“You can always find room for improvement, but I think it’s good that we have found a bit of security after last season’s disappointment.”
