Burscough’s FA Trophy hopes dashed by Ossett Town

BURSCOUGH limped out of the FA Trophy after a lacklustre performance against Ossett Town.

In a tepid opening half that saw both sides wasteful in possession, it was Town that went close first as Mike Whitehouse fired a volley wide from a Simon Baldry knock down.

Burscough responded moments later as Louis Mayers made space on the left but saw his cross cut out.

Town took the lead against the run of play in the 30th minute; Baldry beat the Burscough defence for pace down the right and squared a ball across the box for the onrushing Whitehouse who tapped in from six yards.

The visitors should have made it two but Whitehouse fluffed his lines and blasted over with the net gaping in front of him.

Burscough seized the initiative in the second-half through the introduction of Niall Cummins and the centre-forward had a glorious chance to find the back of the net on 63 minutes when he connected well with Jamil Adam’s perfect cross but headed straight at keeper Matthew Convey.

It became a repeat of the first-half as the West Lancashire men could not turn their possession into more attempts on the Yorkshire goal.

The afternoon was summed up a minute into injury time when Adam found himself with time and space to cross but ballooned the ball into the car park.
